What is a Metal Building?
This may seem like a silly question, especially since the name itself pretty much tells you what the structure is. However there is a little more to the definition than simply saying it’s a building made from metal.

You’re also going to need a concrete foundation for the pole barn. The supports are wood and must be anchored in concrete to ensure the structure’s stability. Buildings like pole barns with wood frames may not be a great option if you live in an area with high humidity. The moisture can cause the wood to warp and loosen bolts, screws, and other fixtures. If humidity isn’t a problem in your area, a pole barn may be just what you need.

Obviously, metal buildings use the sturdy material for their frames. Metal like steel is more expensive than wood. However, you can also think of a metal building as an investment. You may not see a high return on your investment, if any, but you may end up paying less in the long run compared to a pole barn.

- Since metal is stronger than wood, it can support larger and taller structures. You have more design options from the structure’s size to its configuration.
- Metal is resistant to fire damage, making the material a good option if you’re planning on using equipment that produces sparks and/or flames. An example is a blow torch. A single spark from a blow torch can ignite a wood frame but a metal one won’t sustain any damage.
Even though some pole barns use sustainably sourced wood, metal buildings can be a little more eco-friendly. The prefabricated structures are often made from recycled metal. Not only will you get a metal building perfect for your needs, but you’re also doing something positive for the environment.
Roofing Systems
Not only are the frames different between the two types of structures but so are the roofing systems. Both types of buildings have a metal roof but this is where the similarities end.
Metal buildings use a standing seam metal roof. This system is designed to expand and contract, significantly increasing its lifespan. The roof is also almost seamless resulting in almost zero potential leak points.
The metal roof on a pole barn is installed a little differently. The roof is attached to the frame at multiple points. This can make it easier for a strong wind gust to lift a section of the roof. Since it’s screwed into place at several points, your risk of developing leaks significantly increases.
Which Structure is Right for You?
Choosing between a metal building and a pole barn can have a few challenges. There are ups and downs to each type of building. Pole barns are less expensive but durability can be an issue. Remember, the structure comes with a wood frame.
Metal buildings are a little pricier but you can end up saving money in the long run. The metal frame is durable and designed to last for years, sometimes even decades.
